Well, after a little trial and error, I have managed to successfully get Kubuntu 8.04 running on my old Dell Latitude D610 using information primarily from here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx/Feisty_No-Fluff

I used the method that uses step 2a and uses the sp34152.exe file from the hp website and it all worked without drama.

Now it’s runing as a Mythbuntu box… and all is good

Made from Jagermeister and RedBull, the JagerBomb is one part cough medicine, one part ritalin.

Crazy drink….. crazy crazy, yet somewhat enjoyable…..

The caffeine/taurine/whatever in the Red Bull offsets the depressant effect of the jager, resulting in a sort of drunk-but-not-drunk experience.

Strangely, you know you are mashed, yet somehow it feels like you can drink more…. I can see this could be dangerous.

For the un-initiated, Jagermeister is some kind of weird assed kraut root/herb/roadkill blend of stuff, sort of aniseedy/duck vomit flavored concoction. What worried me is the need for this clarification on Wikipedia:

Contrary to urban legend, it is not made with deer or elk blood.

WTF!

Read more here , I’m off to have another!

PING

April 27th, 2008

To back up my system before trying to go to Kubuntu Hardy, Idecided to try some OSS partition imaging tools.

After a lot of looking, I found PING (Partimage Is Not Ghost), which seemed to fit the bill nicley.

It’s a partition imager that runs from a bootable CD (or over the network)

It handled backing my root & home directories to my portable 1TB NTFS formatted external HDD without missing a beat.

It can be obtained for free here: http://ping.windowsdream.com/

It’s not as fance as stuff like Acronis or Norton Ghost, but, hey, it is free, it just works. Meets all the criteria I need.

Bling is for mactards :-)

In short, yes!

I upgraded my system last night using the following method, and it worked a treat. EVERYTHING appears to be working!

Method:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

change all occurences of gutsy in /etc/apt/sources to hardy , save then run:
sudo apt-get-update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

EVENTUALLY everyhting will have loaded (took me 2 hours on a 1.5mbs ADSL connection)

When prompted, choose to keep your existing configs if you are running stuff like samba and apache.

It all went surprisingly well, although I have stuck to the regular repositories rather than some of the more exotic repos out there….

Your milage may vary, but I was impressed with the way it all worked!

Top job, and well done k/ubuntu developers, I dips my lid to ya!

Coaled Hearted

April 17th, 2008

It’s always a pleasure to read logs from my Coaled Hearted cache.

It’s up there as one of my favorite hides, as it takes people to a place not a lot of people know about.

The logs from Tealby and urch1949 make it sound like they had a bit of an adventure!

Tealby’s log:

April 16 by Tealby (915 found)
What drama awaited us at this cache…
WP1 found OK, then we went on an unplanned detour & saw some lovely little birds along the way. I finally tracked down the correct path & then went on a mad dash to get as many WPs as possible without delaying our party too much. I got within 60m of the final WP when I was stopped by thick smoke from a fire brigade burn off. I decided that it would be foolish to try to get the final WP that appeared to be right on top of where the fire trucks were parked, so I reluctantly turned back.

After completing the other nearby cache & then driving further up the road to check out the beach/campground, we thought that the fire fighters may have moved on. It was not to be, so we decided to ask them if we could get the WP info. They were amenable to this, but would not allow us to venture any further. We were concerned that the cache may have been burnt out, but luckily it was in an untouched area. Given the concerns of the fire fighter, we quickly signed the log & moved on. We have our fingers crossed that the burning does not extend to the area where the cache is placed.

So far, in 3 days of caching in this part of the state we have had close encounters with the police & now the fire brigade - we have our fingers crossed that the ambulance service is not next!

TN (but some indelible memories) LN - TFTC.

PS The isolation cells were particularly scary - what an incredible life those poor souls experienced!

History, Adventure, Excitement, Fire, Impending Death…. all part of the experience :-P

Upside-Down-Ternet

Turns all images upside down on a webpage using a proxy.
I love the idea :-)

Spot the Tasmanian!

April 11th, 2008

Interesting to look at the State Dashboard at the moment:

The Victorians have taken over!!!

Pity a lot of them refuse to do GCA caches, they missed out on some great ones!

Dr Who vs. Torchwood?

April 10th, 2008

Strange things are happening…

Watched Dr Who S4E01 the other night, and I REALLY hope that it’s not a sign of the things to come :-/

It’s a strange day when you think a Torchwood plot is less mental than Dr Who……..

We’ll just have to wait and see.

God… I’m such a nerd.

OOh, a NW Event

April 7th, 2008

This event looks good:

GC1AXKQ - The First Ever Traditional Annual NW Tas BBQ created by deegees

Looking forward to it, I think the family will have fun if we camp there too!

My dilemma

April 4th, 2008

Ok, so Embi had the spot first, with his Cachestamper Cache.

This got archived, and I placed my GCA cache Anchors Away in a different area, where it has remained since September 2007.

My dilemma is this, he (embi) has re-hidden Cachestamper and I’m not sure IF I should disable mine.

For now I’ve made it unavailable while I ponder what to do.

This is the one drama with multiple listing sites I suppose :-)
